Wheeling – For the first time in Head Coach Rick West’s tenure, the Wheeling Jesuit men’s swim team defeated the College of Wooster on Saturday afternoon, 142-112, while the women fell short, 137-120.
The milestone win came a day after both teams defeated WVIAC-rivals Fairmont State University by scores of 99-90 (men) and 97-68 (women). This weekend, the Cardinal men improved to 11-1 while the Lady Cards moved to 11-2 overall.
“Both teams swam well this weekend, however, a team like Wooster who is solid in every event shows us were we are in our season,” remarked West after the meet.
“It also helps us prepare for our conference Championship meet,” West added.
The win of the day came from Henrique Fructuozo. The freshman from Brazil touched first in the 400m individual medley with a pool record of 4:15.49 while placing first in two more events. In the 1650m and 500m freestyles events, Fructuozo stopped the timer at 17:14.26 and 5:01.08, respectively.
Patrick Chadowski and Evan Barrow each won a pair of events while Jesse Kubanet, Max Queale, and Tom Smith all finished first for the Cards.
Chadowski was dominant in the 100m (50.07) and 200m (2:00.77) butterfly events while Barrow swept the 100m (55.31) and 200m (2:04.40) backstroke events.
Kubanet won the 200m freestyle with a time of 1:50.21 while Queale finished with honors in the 50m freestyle (22.80). Smith rounded out the individual winners, finishing the 100m freestyle with a time of 50.07.
In addition, the men swept the relay events. The team of Barrow, Chadowski, Queale, and Kyle Rhodes won the 200m medley with a time of 1:39.32 while Queale, Smith, Kubanet, and Chadowski brought home the victory in the 400m freestyle event with a time of 3:19.17.
On the women’s side, the Lady Cards bid fare well to senior Dulce Rizo with four wins. The women opened the meet with a win in the 200m medley relay and followed with wins in the 100m backstroke, 100m breaststroke, and the 50m freestyle events.
The team of Paige Carpenetti, Lydia Kidd, Emily Martin, and Brianna Sieck won the relay event, finishing with a time of 1:55.97. Carpenetti claimed the backstroke event with a time of 1:04.15, and Kidd recorded a time of 1:12.40 to win the breaststroke.
The final Lady Card to touch first was Casey Hamilton. The sophomore from Westlake, OH recorded the win befor the first break in action with a 50m freestyle time of 26.45.
The Wheeling Jesuit swim teams will be back in action on Friday, January 28th as they travel to Latrobe, PA for a meet with St. Vincent College. The meet is scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m.
