Steubenville vs University
First up on the night for the 5A class was Steubenville vs University. All the offensive action in this one came in the first. That’s when Steubenville’s Sagan Smarela went yard to putting the Big Red up 1-0.
After that it was the pitching of Steubenville’s Jules King, who struck out 14 on the day and only allowed 4 base runners.
University did try to make a late game rally but was unsuccessful putting a run on the board.
Several big defensive plays helped out King on the mound. Lauren Huebsch came up with shine time and again from the shortstop position. This contributed to University only having three base runners during the game.
Steubenville will face John Marshall on Saturday for the 5 A crown.
John Marshall vs. Wheeling Park
Up next on the evening for the 5A class was John Marshall facing off against Wheeling Park. There was definitely more offense in this game. Of course, with the last game only being 1-0 that’s not hard to do.
It was early on when John Marshall jumped out to a quick lead. The combination of what’s known in the John Marshall Softball community as the “Dinger Sisters” Kadence Pettit and Ava Blake each blasted 2-run homers in this match up. These two superstars directly contributed 4 of the 5 runs the Monarchs needed on the day to secure a 5-3 over Park.
The early scores came from a Pettit homer in the first with Blake already on base giving the Monarchs a 2-0 after 1.
It was in the fourth when the Monarchs added another run, but the Patriots answered that run with one of their own to make the score now 3-1 in the Monarchs favor.
Masyn Inclan led of the fifth for the Monarchs. Inclan reached first on a base hit. This set the plate for the other half of the “Dinger Sisters”, Ava Blake. That is when Blake added her 2-run homer on a screamer that soared over the fence leaving a nice remember me mark on a fan’s vehicle.
Park did make a run and put a couple more on runs the board, but this is where the score remained as the Monarchs defeated the patriots 5-3.
Pettit was also the winning pitcher on the day striking out 7 batters. Pettit is a West Liberty signee and Blake is a Marshall signee. There’s much more left to see from these two.
The Monarchs will play Steubenville for the 5 A crown Saturday.
