WAYNESBURG, Pa. – The Bethany College volleyball team had a nice recovery from its first loss of the season Friday, as the Bison defeated Washington & Jefferson and Waynesburg by 3-0 scores Saturday afternoon in a PAC tri-match at Waynesburg.
It was a short turnaround time for Bethany, who lost for the first time this season Friday night at Westminster. The day started for BC with a match against W&J, who suffered a 3-2 loss to Waynesburg in the initial contest Saturday. The Bison went to work and put away the Presidents in three sets by scores of 25-14, 25-18, 25-18.
Senior Carrie Talkington (Moundsville, W.Va./John Marshall) had a solid match at the net, putting away 11 kills and totaling five blocks, including four solos. Junior Lauren Goodwill (Canton, Ohio/Jackson) notched eight kills as well to spark the attack, which was engineered by junior setter Jessica Zavatchen (Uniontown, Pa./Laurel Highlands) with 37 assists.
Zavatchen also registered 10 digs in the match for a double-double, but she did not lead the team in that category, as seniors Tiffany Hoffman (Cambridge, Ohio/John Glenn) and Jessica Cole (Connellsville, Pa.) had 12 and 11, respectively. Hoffman and Cole also both served two aces apiece.
In the final match of the day, Bethany (16-1, 6-1) made it a sweep for the day, as well as the match against Waynesburg by scores of 25-12, 25-17, 25-17. The attack was spearheaded by junior Taylor Cassidy (Barboursville, W.Va./Cabell Midland) with 13 kills, while Zavatchen compiled 33 assists.
The defensive efforts were once again led by Tiffany Hoffman in the back with a dozen digs and Talkington at the net with six total blocks. Senior Megan Hoffman (Cambridge, Ohio/John Glenn) fired off a pair of service aces as well.
After playing three matches in less than 24 hours, the Bison will have some time to recover, as they don’t return to action again until Thursday with a non-conference tilt at Carlow. Start time in Pittsburgh is scheduled for 7 p.m.
