Wheeling, WV -After dropping game one 5-2, Wheeling Jesuit women’s softballuse a second inning offensive explosion for a 6-1 win to split the conference series with Davis & Elkins College. Lady Cardinals move to 4-15 overall and 2-4 in the WVIAC while the Lady Senators are 4-2 in WVIAC play and 11-19 overall.
In the early game, Olivia Wamsley held D&E to four hits while giving up three earned runs and five total. The sophomore struckout five Senators and handed out for free passes in seven innings of work. At the plate, Wamsley singled and scored in the seventh in a final attempt for the win.
Jordan Burkhart and Shaynna Johnson each had multi-hit performances while Aleecia Sunagel and Rachelle Carello added base hits. Burkhart, Sunagel, and Johnson had three consecutive singles in the fourth inning, but failed to cross the plate because of a caught line drive and a double play, Burkhart hit a solo homerun in the sixth for the Lady Cards first run.
In the nightcap, seven Lady Cards recorded hits while Ashley McSweeney led the way with a three hit, two RBI performance. Burkhart also added 2 RBI as she singled with the bases loaded in the second inning followed by a McSweeney double to clear the bases. Samantha Kozbial recorded a RBI in the fifth for Jesuit’s final run as Sunagel, Johnson and Carello reached on singles and Gina Hicks added a double.
Ashley Nichols received the win as she hurled a complete game, giving up one run on eight hits. Nichols fanned three and allowed one walk.
