The Union Local Jets hit the road to Cadiz to take on Harrison Central for a Thursday evening contest. Union Local finished last season with a 25-2 overall record and a regional semi-final appearance. They were hit hard by graduation which opened the door for new players to step up in the clutch. Coach Scooter Tolzda’s roster has eight players for the 23-24 campaign. Union Local came into the contest with a 2-2 record. The Huskies came in with a 0-4 record but the first three of four games were on the road.
Union Local took the opening tip and started the game on an 8-0 run. Huskies Senior Guard, Danica Rensi was able to stop the run midway through the first quarter and get Harrison Central on the board. Sophomore Kara Blackburn would add a basket as well but after the first buzzer the scoreboard read 15-4 in favor of the guests, Union Local. The teams added the same amount of points in the second quarter and Union Local took a 30-8 lead into the locker room for half time. Both teams struggled from three point range in the first half with Union Local going 3-14 and Harrison Central going 0-8. Sophomore Laken Vinskovich led the way for the Jets with 13 points and five rebounds. She was also 5-6 from the free throw line. Her classmate, Delaney Butler pulled down four rebounds in the first half. Blackburn had four points in the first half for the host Huskies.
Union Local outscored Harrison Central in the third quarter 16-7, but Danica Rensi didn’t let the Huskies go quietly as she collected five of the seven points for Harrison Central. Union Local took their 46-15 lead into the fourth quarter and the defense continued to swarm. The Jets finished the game with a nine point fourth quarter to seal the victory 55-19.
Leading the way for Union Local was senior Lauren Miller with 18 points. Vinskovich finished with 15 while junior Teegan Day dropped in nine points on the evening. Myah Martin hit two threes to finish with six points, Butler finished with four and Ella Pietranton finished off the scoring with a three pointer. Union Local forced 18 turnovers on the evening and collected 25 rebounds. Miller led the way on defense with five steals. The Jets finished 6-8 from the free throw line. They also finished shooting thirty percent from behind the arc.
Harrison Central were paced by Blackburn and Rensi who both finished the night with six points each. Senior Angi Ferri finished the night with five points and junior Maddie Sedgmer finished with two. The Huskies tied the Jets on the night collecting 25 rebounds. Harrison Central will look to rebound on Monday night as they welcome in 4-1 Indian Creek who knocked off Martins Ferry 54-50 in overtime. Union Local will hit the road once again to take on a 4-2 Bellaire squad on Monday Night. Both teams are coming off victories as Bellaire knocked off Beaver Local 63-33.
