Single elimination in any sport has one goal to survive and advance to the next round. With teams we like to cover at ovathletics.com such as Wheeling Park, Morgantown, Wheeling Central, Cameron, St. Marys, Doddridge, East Fairmont, and North Marion all making it to the state tournament we have much to talk about.
Our AAAA participants Wheeling Park and Morgantown are the top 2 seeds in the division. Wheeling Park moved onto the semifinals with a 82-36 victory over Washington. Morgantown also moved out of the quarterfinals with a 58-21 victory over Princeton. Morgantown will play Spring Valley in the semifinal round today at 11:30 in a 2 vs 3 matchup. While Wheeling Park will play the 5 seed Spring Mills tonight at 7:15.
The number 1 ranked North Marion Huskies play their first game this evening in Charleston against 8 seeded Hampshire in the AAA bracket with a 5:30 tip. East Fairmont (the 3 seed) is our other AAA matchup they play this morning at 9:30 against Philip Barbour.
Wheeling Central lost a heartbreaker in overtime in their AA quarterfinal matchup against Charleston Catholic 47-45. The season ends for the Maroon Knights, but congradulations to them on a great season and a trip to Charleston for the state tournament. St. Marys also bows out in the AA quarterfinals via a 48-40 loss to number 6 seed Petersburg.
The defending A state champion Cameron Dragons started the tournament off right with a 79-59 win over the 8 seed Pendleton County. The number 1 Cameron plays tomorrow at 1:00 against No. 5 Webster County in the state semifinals for a chance to make back to back championship games. Doddridge County also moved onto the A semifinals with a 59-27 victory over Gilmer County (who lost in the state title game to the Dragons last year). The Bulldogs will play early on Friday with a 9:30 tip against No. 2 Tucker County.
Good luck to all of our Ohio Valley (athletics.com) teams, let’s bring home some state championship trophies.
