PITTSBURGH — Left-hander Jeff Locke will be making his third Major League start against the Cincinnati Reds tonight at PNC Park.
The 23-year-old rookie has allowed six runs on 10 hits over two starts (eight innings). He has walked six while striking out one.
Locke has a chance to start the 2011 season finale on Wednesday at Miller Park in Milwaukee.
“He has a chance, yes,” Pirates manager Clint Hurdle said. “[Tonight’s results], they could factor in.“
Hurdle also mentioned that left-handers Brian Burres and Aaron Thompson are still in the mix for the finale on Wednesday as well.
I’ve got Burres also, Brian could pitch on Wednesday,“ Hurdle said. “We haven’t closed the book on him or Thompson. One of those three guys, I would anticipate starting on Wednesday.”
Locke, who was ranked as the Pirates No. 8 best prospect in the system prior to the 2011 season by Baseball America, went 8-10 with a 3.70 ERA in 28 combined appearances this year between Double-A Altoona and Triple-A Indianapolis.
The Pirates have gone 36-38 against their division rivals this season, 19-18 on the road. They have won two of the last three games against the Brewers after losing each of the first eight meetings.
