With two outs in the bottom of the 9th inning of Tuesday night’s 8-2 loss to the Astros, Andrew McCutchen took a 1-1 pitch for a solo-homer to right field –his 20th long ball of the season.
McCutchen became just the eighth player in club history to hit 20 home runs and steal 20 bases in a season. He joins Dave Parker (1978 and 1979), Barry Bonds (1987, 1991, 1992), Andy Van Slyke (1987, 1988), Al Martin (1999), Kevin Young (1999), Jason Bay (2005) and Nate McLouth (2008).
McCutchen now has 48 career home runs, all of them hit as a center fielder. Slyke holds the club record for the most by a center fielder at 112. The next homer hit by McCutchen will tie him with Max Carey for eighth on the teams all-time home run leaders by a center fielder.
In 133 games this season, McCutchen is batting .274 with 31 doubles, four triples, 20 home runs, 81 RBI and 20 stolen bases.
