INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – West Liberty’s Ty McGeary has risen atop the leaderboard for the Division II Most Dominant Wrestler award in the latest standings update for the 2023 NCAA Wrestling Awards, released by the NCAA on Wednesday.
McGeary, ranked No. 2 nationally at 184, owns a 24-1 record after placing second at the recent NCAA Super Region 3 Championships to secure a spot in the national tournament. He is at the top to the Division II Most Dominant Wrestler award standings with a mark of 4.78 points per match.
The championship match loss versus the No. 4 ranked wrestler in the weight class was his first loss of the season after entering the super regionals with a 21-0 record and picking up three straight pins to advance to the title bout in the event. A junior from McDonald, Pa, McGeary has won gold at the Findlay Open, MEC Championships, and John Summa Invitational this year.
The NCAA Wrestling Awards began in 2012 and features three awards in each division to honor the Most Dominant Wrestler, as well as the wrestler with the most falls and tech falls throughout the season. For results to be counted for the awards they must come against opponents in the same division.
The Most Dominant Wrestler standings are calculated by adding the total number of team points awarded through match results and dividing that number by the total number of matches wrestled. The standings feature a 17-match minimum to qualify for the standings.
Points per match are awarded as follows:
Fall, forfeit, injury default or DQ = 6 points (-6 points for a loss)
Tech falls = 5 points (-5 points for a loss)
Major decision = 4 points (-4 points for a loss)
Decision = 3 points (-3 points for a loss)
McGeary and seven teammates will be competing in the NCAA DII National Championships on March 10 and 11 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
