PITTSBURGH — The New York Mets claimed right-hander Jeremy Hefner off waivers on Monday. The Pirates designated Hefner for assignment on Friday in order to add infielder Yamiaco Navarro to the roster. Hefner was claimed by Pittsburgh off waivers by the San Diego Padres in November.
Hefner, 25, spent the 2011 season with Triple-A Tucson and went 9-7 with a 4.98 ERA and 120 strikeouts in a team-high 28 starts. He also led Tucson with 157.1 innings pitched and tied for eighth among Pacific Coast League pitchers in that department. In addition, Hefner tied for sixth in the league in strikeouts and shared the team lead in wins. Hefner was originally selected by San Diego in the fifth round of the 2007 Draft.
The Mets also signed free agent left-hander Garrett Olson. Olson, 28, appeared in four games with Pittsburgh in 2011. He allowed one run on two hits over 4.1 innings of relief. Olson appeared in 24 games (15 starts) with Triple-A Indianapolis where he posted a 3.05 ERA over 85.2 innings. Olson walked 47 and struck out 61.
