With the football season at the half way point, we’ve seen some surprising things around the Ohio Valley.
After losing the bulk of their superstars from a playoff team a year before, the Martins Ferry Purple Riders are looking very strong at the midway point with a 4-1 record. The Riders fell in week 1 to Buckeye Local, and they haven’t looked back. Last week they dismantled Union Local 42-0 in what many thought would be a close game.
The Buckeye Local Panthers are again flying under the radar with a solid 4-1 record. Last week they lost for the first team this season in a barn burner to Indian Creek with the score of 23-20
In a battle of the undefeated, we’ve got Steubenville, Magnolia, Monroe Central, Bridgeport, Weirton Madonna, and probably most surprising, Brooke. The Bruins finished 3-7 last year, and were considered to be in a rebuilding mode after bringing in a new coaching staff.
The list of undefeated will undoubtedly be smaller by 1 team next week as Weirton Madonna and Bridgeport are set to faceoff this Saturday at Perkins Field. Weirton Madonna won this newly rivaled match-up last year, but the Dogs are poised to show that they are the top team in the OVAC Single A.
Steubenville continues their long extended regular season win steak at 5-0 despite having several key players banged up. Lead by Senior QB Dwight Macon, the Big Red are playing their last regular season away game of the year at Wheeling Island this Friday to face the Wheeling Park Patriots.
Anything can happen in the next 5 weeks, I’m looking forward to some good football!
