Cool temperatures, but clear skies overlooked the campus of John Marshall High School on Thursday evening. The John Marshall Monarchs took on the Brooke Bruins in Game One of the Class AAA Region One Section One Softball Tournament. This was the third matchup of the season between the Monarchs and Bruins with John Marshall winning the first two.
After West Liberty commit, Kadence Pettit’s flawless first inning on the mound, the host Monarchs got things started on their home field in the bottom of first inning taking a 1-0 lead on a Tori Finley run.
Finley took off to second base on a pitch from Brooke’s Landry Bone, and the ball was overthrown. Finley quickly got up and headed towards third and the ball was overthrown again as she made her way to home for the game’s first run.
However, the Bruins would not go down quietly as they crossed two runners across the plate. Wyntar McQuiston and Racheal Whitehead scored the runs for the Bruins.
John Marshall headed into the bottom of the second inning down by a run, but Alexis Thayer hit into a fielder’s choice to score Carlie Keyser and tied the game at 2.
The third inning belonged to the Monarchs. Marshall University commit Ava Blake cleared the fence in left center to give the Monarchs the lead once again 4-2. Bone walked 5 batters in a row to give John Marshall a 5-2 lead.
Reese Ward and Masyn Inclan belted back to back singles to give the Monarchs the lead after three. Just like she did in the first inning, Pettit was on fire again on the mound striking out all three Bruin hitters to send us into the bottom of the fourth.
Paytyn Tucker added another RBI to give John Marshall a 9-2 lead.
Inclan capped off the scoring on the evening with an RBI fielder’s choice as the Monarchs took a 10-2 lead into the Top of the 5.
Pettit capped off an amazing performance as the Monarchs held the Bruins scoreless to end the game after five innings 10-2.
Bone took the loss on the mound for Brooke surrendering 8 runs and walking 8 and striking out one.
Karson Drumm came in relief of Bone in the fourth and surrendered 2 runs, but struckout one. Alexa Foresha, Angelina Lippoli, and McQurston had the hits for Brooke.
Pettit brought home the win for the host Monarchs with an 11-strikeout performance and didn’t surrender a walk. Thayer and Blake pace John Marshall with 2RBI’S. Carlee Yoho had a two-hit night for the Monarchs who outhit Brooke 8-3.
John Marshall now awaits Morgantown tomorrow in Glen Dale. The Mohicans took down Wheeling Park by a score of 7-2.
