PITTSBURGH — Right-hander Charlie Morton, who had an unbelievable back bounce season, underwent hip surgery on Monday and will be out for six months.
Morton underwent successful surgery yesterday to repair a torn labrum in his left hip. The surgery was performed by Dr. Thomas Byrd in Nashville, TN.
Although this is no specific injury date or cause of the injury, Morton said the hip bothered him off and on during the season and it was decided that the best course of action was to have it repaired.
The typical recovery time for this type of surgery is approximately six months, making Morton’s return not until April of 2012.
Morton went 10-10 with two complete games and a 3.83 ERA in 29 starts during the 2011 season. He lead the staff with 171.2 innings pitched and second in wins behind Kevin Correia. Morton was coming off a 2010 season where he sported a 7.57 ERA in 17 starts in Pittsburgh.
