PITTSBURGH — The Pittsburgh Pirates today announced that they have agreed to terms on a one-year contract with right-hander Charlie Morton for the 2012 season, thus avoiding arbitration. The deal is reported to be for $2.445 million in his first year of arbitration eligibility.
Morton, 28, went 10-10 with a 3.83 ERA over 29 starts this season with the Pirates and led the staff with 171.2 innings pitched. Morton threw two complete games and his 10 wins were second most on the team. Only right-hander Kevin Correia (12) had more.
Morton underwent hip surgery in October to repair a torn labrum but is expected to be ready for opening day.
The Pirates also avoided arbitration with closer Joel Hanrahan earlier today with a one-year deal. There are still four remaining arbitration eligible players left. They include Garrett Jones, Jeff Karstens, Evan Meek and Casey McGehee.
