The Oklahoma Sooners (7 – 2, 5 – 1, #12 BCS) come into Morgantown boasting one of the best pass defenses in the country (#2 in pass efficiency, #8 in passing defense). They will take on a West Virginia team (5 – 4, 2 – 4, UR) trying to regain their identity.
The Mountaineers, Losers of four straight, are in the midst of the worst losing streak since 2001 when they went 3-8 in Rich Rodriguez’s first year.
Even with the losing streak, WVU still boasts a top five passing offense led by Geno Smith (3041 YDS, 31 TD, 3 INT) and wideouts Tavon Austin (968 YDS, 11 TD) and Stedman Bailey (1055 YDS, 16 TD).
The Sooners show some offensive firepower themselves. They are led by Landry Jones (2691 YDS, 18 TD, 7 INT), WR’s Kenny Stills (692 YDS, 6 TD) and Justin Brown (537 YDS, 4 TD), and RB Damie Williams (687 YDS, 9 TD). Oklahoma can also run the wildcat with Blake Bell (95 YDS passing, 162 YDS rushing) who leads the team in touchdowns with 10.
On the defensive side of the ball, both teams are direct opposites. The Sooners are in the top ten in passing defense while the Mountaineers are at the bottom of the ranks (#120 in passing defense, #119 in passing efficiency). WVU does hold the edge in rushing defense giving up 134 YPG while OU gives up 155 YPG.
While the game looks to be a blowout on paper, this contest may surprise everyone. Oklahoma is still in the hunt for a BCS bid if they win out while the Mountaineers are looking to re-gain respect from everyone under the lights on national television.
WVU Keys to the Upset Establish the run: In order to get their record-breaking offense back on track, they will have to run the ball effectively.
Pass like its September again: If Geno Smith and Co. can somehow break the OU secondary and throw up numbers like they did in the first five games then they could have a shot.
Special Teams: WVU has to erase the special teams blunders that have haunted them over the last four games. Add a big return or two and we could have us a ballgame.
Turnovers: Landry Jones throws more INT’s on the road. Take advantage of this and you’re in business. WVU hasn’t capitalized on many mistakes this season and has to change this or it could be a long night.
Keep the crowd in the game: It’s a night game at Mountaineer field. WVU is 19 – 4 in night games since 2000 with their losses coming to Unranked Cincinnati and Pitt, #4 LSU, and #1 Kansas State. If the Mounties can keep it close then it will be hard for Landry Jones and Co. to execute.
