Thursday evening featured 4 games, at 2 stadiums, in what was tabbed the “OVAC Kickoff Night”.
Wheeling Island Stadium:
- New Philadelphia vs. Wheeling Park
- Cameron vs. Bishop Donahue
Steubenville Harding Stadium:
- Morgantown vs. Steubenville
- Edison vs. Oak Glen
At Wheeling Island, New Philly won over Wheeling Park at their home stadium by the narrow score 21-20. Wheeling Park jumped up quick on the Quakers 14-0 early in the game, but the Patriots were unable to seal the victory. Jamal Johnson ran for 230 yards on 39 touches for New Philadelphia.
Bishop Donahue proceeded action by thumping Cameron 48-8.
At Harding Stadium, Steubenville hosted the Morgantown Mohigans in what quickly became a one sided affair with Steubenville winning 31-9. Jo-Jo Pierro paced the Big Red offense with a pair of touchdowns. Steubenville has won 12 consecutive season openers.
Oak Glen and Edison followed as the second game of the evening. The Golden Bears were up by as many as 15 points in the 2nd half, before Edison came storming back late in the game to make it a contest. Oak Glen was able to hold off the Wildcat comeback attempt, to win 29-28 in a thriller.
