The Buckeyes dominated both lines of scrimmage and as a result, they leave Champaign with a 17-7 win over Illinois.
Ohio State came out and dictated the game with their physical style of play. On offense, they used their running game to establish tempo and keep Illinois’ offense at bay. For the most part, it worked as Dan Herron returned to lead a solid rushing attack.
The defense also played well. The defensive line wreaked havoc and was constantly chasing Nathan Scheelhaase all over the pocket. Additionally, this unit made three of the biggest plays of the game when they forced Illinois into committing three turnovers.
The offensive line did its part. Even though the defense knew what was coming, the line did a good job generating push and opening holes for Herron and company.
The special teams added to the contribution. A huge 43 yard-field goal by Drew Basil got the ball rolling. The coverage teams did their part, limiting Illinois to minimal returns.
Finally, Dan Herron made the biggest difference on offense. He was a breath of fresh air as he made countless plays. His return made a huge difference and added a new dimension to the offense. It’s clear he was the focal point this week and he came out and delivered.
However, one area could use some improvement.
For one, the coaching staff needs to place more emphasis on the passing game. Although the climate was blustery, they could have established a short passing game to spread out Illinois’ defense, which would open up running lanes. It would also provide Braxton Miller with more game reps and give him more confidence.
Ultimately, this was a huge win for the Buckeyes. Following consecutive losses, Ohio State showed mental toughness by coming back and playing well in a tough environment. Now the scarlet and gray get a week off before their huge showdown with the Badgers.
