Games like tonight are why we love college football. In what was a highly competitive contest, Ohio State stormed out to a 26-14 lead only to see their lead vanish in a matter of minutes. Then, when all hope seemed lost, Braxton Miller rolled out of the pocket to find Devin Smith wide open in the end zone with under a minute remaining. That 40-yard touchdown pass gave Ohio State the 33-29 win.
Game ball(s) goes to: John Simon and Braxton Miller had stellar games. Simon is becoming one of the most dominant players in college football. He does such a good job firing off his stance and shedding blocks to chase down ball carriers. Meanwhile, Miller had a breakout performance. He had more poise in the pocket and was more decisive when he ran. Miller accounted for three touchdowns (one pass, two run) and his 40-yard touchdown pass to Smith was the biggest play of the year so far.
The deciding factor was: Ohio State’s defensive line made all the difference. Wisconsin averages over 250 rushing yards a game. The Buckeyes held them to just 89 yards. This was important because it made Wisconsin one-dimensional. Additionally, the line was able to put pressure on Russell Wilson, causing him to rush throws.
The biggest surprise was: Ohio State’s ability to dominate on both lines of scrimmage. The defense did an excellent job shooting gaps and stopping ball carriers. On the other hand, Wisconsin knew Ohio State was going to run and yet the Buckeyes were still able to make big plays. This was huge because it kept Wisconsin’s offense off the field and changed the tempo of the game. Ohio State finished with 268 rushing yards.
What it all means: Wisconsin is a very good football team. It took two miracle passes in the past two weeks in order for them to lose. For Ohio State, this game demonstrates the Buckeyes might be better than many people think. This is a young team that continues to show they are improving. With four games remaining, the Buckeyes could go on a roll and find themselves earning a trip to the Big Ten Championship game.
