Earlier this wrestling season we began covering things at Wheeling Park’s home opener against John Marshall High School. Later in the year we made it over to Barnesville for the Barnesville Doan Ford Invitational. It would only make sense that we catch these two teams again when they squared off against each at Wheeling Park for their senior night and, wow, were we in for a show.
Admittedly, we arrived a bit late to the match and entering the gym we noticed Barnesville already with a 20-10 lead. In fact, the Shamrocks appeared to have Park on the ropes early on winning the first six of nine bouts. At one-point Barnesville lead grew to an impressive 32-19.
That is when Park started to dig deep with Gavin Washington beginning the comeback. Washington pinned a Barnesville wrestler in the second period. Next three-time state champ Eric Brothers polishes off another Barnesville wrestler in a stunning 10 seconds. This brought Park within one point 32-31 and set up Park’s Hunter Means who also added a pin in the final bout for Park to take the 37-32 victory on the night.
