Wheeling Park wanted to show off their new turf and it turned out to be a great day to do so. The weather held up very well and a bit of a late arrival from Brooke helped this reporter to be there in time for the first pitch.
Wheeling Park’s starting pitcher turned in a good day from the mound. Luke Doyle had an overall solid performance, pitching 6.2 innings. He enjoyed 5 strike outs, only giving up 5 hits and 2 runs to the visiting Bruins.
This solid pitching was enough to help the Patriots to hold onto a 5-2 victory over the Bruins with a little help from their bats.
Gian DeGenova got the offense going in the 3rd when he hit a solo homerun to put the Patriots up 1-0.
It wasn’t until the 5th inning when the Patriots added another run. Then in the 6th they pulled away even more by adding another 3 runs. Nathan Bittinger, Grant Simons, Quinn Jamison, and Nate Simon all added runs for the Patriots.
At the top of the 7th Brooke tried to make a game of it putting 2 on the board with runs from Anthony Bachinski and Raymond DeFranco.
The Bruins starting pitcher Garrett Hornick did have a decent day on the mound going 5 innings with 5 strike outs and only 2 base on balls. He did give up 6 hits, 4 runs, and the solo HR by DeGenova.
Speaking of DGenova, he did come in as the closer on the mound to get the last out and secure the victory for the Patriots.
