WHEELING – Wheeling Nailers rookie forward Nick Petersen has been named the Sher-Wood Hockey ECHL Player of the Week, while goaltender Peter Delmas has been named the Reebok Hockey ECHL Goaltender of the Week. Both players played big roles in helping Wheeling win all three games last week extending its winning streak to seven games.
Petersen, 21, finished the week scoring two goals and adding five assists for a total of seven points while also posting a +5 rating. Petersen opened the week with an assist in a 2-0 win at Elmira on Friday and then scored two goals and had three assists in a 7-4 win against Trenton on Saturday. Saturday’s performance marked the third five-point game for Petersen this season. He ended the week with an assist in a 2-1 win against the Devils on Sunday. Petersen also won the weekly award for the week of October 25-31.
The Wakefield, Quebec, native leads ECHL rookies with 57 points and is currently riding a 12-game point scoring streak. A fourth round selection of the Pittsburgh Penguins in 2009, Petersen spent the previous three seasons in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League with Shawinigan and Saint John scoring 198 points (87g-111a) in 178 games
On behalf of Nick Petersen, a case of pucks will be donated to a Wheeling youth hockey organization by Sher-Wood Hockey, the exclusive puck supplier of the ECHL. Since beginning its sponsorship of the award in 2000-01, Sher-Wood Hockey has donated more than 23,000 pucks to youth hockey organizations in ECHL cities.
Delmas, 20, was 2-0-0 with one shutout, a 0.50 goals-against average and a .985 save percentage in two appearances last week. Delmas recorded his first professional shutout on Friday, making 28 saves in a 2-0 win at Elmira. He followed that up with 38 save performance in a 1-0 win against Trenton on Sunday.
The Bedford, Nova Scotia native is 6-0-0 in six appearances this season, with a 1.67 goals-against average and a save percentage of .948. He has appeared in two games with the Hamilton Bulldogs of the American Hockey League this season, going 1-0-1 with a 1.92 goals-against average and a save percentage of .933. Delmas is a 2008 second round draft pick of the Colorado Avalanche. Delmas appeared in 147 games with Lewiston, Quebec and Halifax of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League over the previous four seasons posting a record of 69-64-5 with four shutouts, a goals-against average of 3.26 and an .891 save percentage
Delmas becomes the second Nailers goaltender to earn Goaltender of the Week honors this season. Patrick Killeen won the award after the first week of the season back in October.
The Nailers next home game is set for this Saturday against division rival the Cincinnati Cyclones. Game time is 8:05 p.m. Saturday’s game is Pink in the Rink. The team will be wearing special pink jerseys, and there will be a number of silent auctions with great memorabilia to raise money for breast cancer research. Fans can show their support by purchasing Pink Packs for $25, which includes a game ticket, pink shirt, and a special Nailers pink puck. Portions of the proceeds from Pink Packs, ticket sales, and silent auctions will go to the Susan G. Komen Foundation.
