With under an hour left until the end of the non-waiver trade deadline, the Pirates made another move and this time, they improve their bench. The Pirates traded defensive specialist Gorkys Hernandez and a competitive-balance pick (as of now pick No. 33 in next year’s draft) to the Miami Marlins for first baseman Gaby Sanchez.
Sanchez is another buy low pickup for the Pirates, similar to their acquisition of Travis Snider. Sanchez, who will turn 29 next month, is under control until the end of the 2016 season and is arbitration eligible at the end of next season.
Sanchez struggled at the beginning of this season, posting a .202/.250/.306 with three home runs and 17 RBI in 55 games resulting in his demotion. In 2010 and 2011 however, he hit 19 home runs in each season with 85 and 78 RBI respectively. In the two seasons, Sanchez posted .273/.341/.448 and .266/.352/.427 lines respectively.
