The Pirates didn’t need to wait until the deadline to make a splash with a trade. Former first round pick Brad Lincoln, who has been solid as a reliever, was shipped off to Toronto as the Blue Jays parted with 24-year-old outfielder Travis Snider.
Snider, a left fielder, had a .235 average, three homers and eight RBI in nine games with Toronto this year and in 61 games with Triple-A Las Vegas, Snider hit .335 with 17 doubles, 13 home runs and 57 RBI.
Snider, a former first round pick in 2006, is a bat that the Pirates need. The Pirates will have control of Snider until the end of the 2016 season. Similar to the Wandy Rodriguez trade, the Pirates made a move to not only help themselves this year, but also for the future. General manager Neal Huntington said that the Pirates were focused on moving away from the rental approach this year.
Fun note on Snider is that he goes by the nickname of lunchbox. He said he’s gone by it since he was a freshman in high school and it’s because he eats a lot. You can find him on Twitter at @lunchboxhero45.
For Lincoln, the Pirates lose what has been a huge asset to their bullpen success this season and a potential closer-in-waiting. The Phillies inquired about Lincoln last week with Shane Victorino being the person of interest, but the Pirates swiftly declined the offer.
