PITTSBURGH — The Pittsburgh Pirates announced on Monday that they have agreed to terms on a one-year contract with right-hander Joel Hanrahan for the 2012 season. The deal is reported to be worth $4.1 million and Hanrahan can make up to $50,000 in incentives.
Hanrahan, 30, made $1.4 million in his first year of arbitration last year. In his first year as the Pirates closer, Hanrahan was named to the National League All-Star team and converted 40 of his 44 save opportunities while posting a 1.83 ERA with 61 strikeouts over 68.2 innings. Hanrahan was just one of six pitchers to convert at least 40 saves and just the third to do so in Pirates history. His 26 consecutive saves prior to the All-Star break established a club record passing Mike Williams, who had 25 before the All-Star break in 2002.
The Pirates now have five arbitration eligible players remaining. Those players include first baseman Garrett Jones, right-handers Jeff Karstens, Evan Meek, Charlie Morton and third baseman Casey McGehee. The club has until January 18th to come up with a deal. If both sides do not come to an agreement, the hearing will take place in front of an arbitrator in February.
