The Pirates were finally able to get that late inning win against the Cincinnati Reds. The Reds, who have taken the last two games in extra innings, were unable to put together a come from behind ninth Sunday.
Scott Burres pitched seven innings allowing one run on four hits. Burres struck out six while walking one in the game giving the batters a great opportunity at the win.
And the Pirates would answer the call just in time. A three run ninth inning put the Pirates on top. And the hero of the day, Andrew McCutchen drove in all three runs on a RBI double to left field.
McCutchen, clutch as always, came to bat with the bases loaded and two outs after Bowker walked and Doumit and Jones singled. The three run hit was his only of the night, going 1 for 5.
And unlike last night where Joel Hanrahan gave up the game-tying run to send the game into extra innings, he was able to get the save after some trouble. Hanrahan had two outs after the first two batters, but beaned Ramon Hernandez. A singles and a walk later the bases were loaded. But Hanrahan struck out Chris Heisey, the hero of last night’s game, and got the save.
The Pirates ship out tomorrow for a four game road series with the Mets.
