PITTSBURGH — The Pittsburgh Pirates today announced that they have added six prospects to the non-roster spring training roster. Those players include pitchers Gerrit Cole and Mike Crotta, catchers Ramon Cabrera, Eric Fryer and Tony Sanchez and outfielder Robbie Grossman.
Cole, 21, was the first overall pick in the 2011 draft by Pittsburgh. He made his professional debut in the Arizona Fall League where he posted a 2-0 record and a 3.00 ERA with 16 strikeouts over 15.0 innings.
Crotta, 27, made the club out of spring training last season and made 15 appearances with Pittsburgh where he posted a 9.28 ERA. Crotta was limited to just 11.2 innings combined with Double-A and Triple-A last season because of right elbow posterior inflammation.
Cabrera, 22, led the farm system with a .343 average in his first season at High-A Bradenton. Over 92 games, Cabrera scored 46 runs, hit 25 doubles and posted a .410 OBP.
Fryer, 26, made his Major League debut with Pittsburgh and hit for a .269 average over 10 games during the 2011 season. Fryer posted a .273 average combined with Double-A Altoona and Triple-A Indy.
Sanchez, 23, was a first round pick (fourth overall) by the Pirates in the 2009 draft. Sanchez had a down year in his first full season at Double-A where he hit for a .241 average over 118 games.
Grossman, 22, was named the Pirates Minor League player-of-the year after hitting for a .294 average over 129 games at High-A Bradenton in 2011. Grossman led all of minor league baseball in runs (127) and walks (104) while becoming the first player since Nick Swisher in 2004 to score at least 100 runs and walk at least 100 times.
With the six prospects added to the big league camp, the Pirates have now 17 non-roster invites. They include Brandon Boggs, Cabrera, Jeff Clement, Cole, Crotta, Nick Evans, Jake Fox, Fryer, Grossman, Anderson Hernandez, Ryota Igrashi, Logan Kensing, Shairon Martis, Jose Morales, Jo-Jo Reyes, Sanchez and Tim Wood.
