Seven and five: That was the Pirate’s record going into their first game with the Milwaukie Brewers on Tuesday evening. The Pirates were a half game back of first place and two games over the .500 mark. Six games later the Pirates are now seven and eleven and are in last place in the central division. And if that news was not bad enough, the Pirates start a three game series with the Milwaukie Brewers Monday. The Pirates are 6-26 against Milwaukie having lost 21 straight at Miller Park.
Today’s loss was marked by many missed opportunities for the Pirates. They had a season high 14 hits today, but had trouble scoring runs. The Pirates had men in scoring position in the second, fourth, sixth, and eighth innings, but they only scored three runs. Meanwhile the Astros took every advantage of their breaks scoring a total of ten men on ten hits. Much of this was due to the six stolen bases that catcher Ryan Doumit gave up though six innings.
Starting Pitcher Charlie Morton lasted only three innings today, allowing five hits and five earned runs. In his four starts Morton has allowed 28 hits and 24 earned runs in 13 1/3 innings pitching this season, an ERA of 16.20.
In the Pirates eleven losses they have been outscored by a combined score of 102-23.
The Pirates continue their ten-game road trip in Milwaukie Monday evening.
