After acquiring Gaby Sancez from the Marlins, the Pirates had plans to just release Casey McGehee. Instead however, they baited him out there and took the first bite. The bite happened to come from the Yankees who are in need of a third baseman to platoon with Eric Chavez while Alex Rodgriguez heals from injury.
The 33-year-old veteran is a free agent after next year. Qualls has split time between Philadelphia and New York this year and has struggled. In 35 games with the Phillies, Qualls posted a 1-1 record with a 4.60 ERA and a 1.532 WHIP.
In eight games with the Yankees, Qualls allowed five runs good for a 6.14 ERA and a 1.773 WHIP.
With the move, Sanchez is all but guaranteed to come up and split time at first with Garrett Jones.
