PITTSBURGH — The Pittsburgh Pirates released right-hander Ross Ohlendorf on Wednesday, opening up a spot on the 40-man roster for a selection in the Rule 5 draft. The Pirates will select eighth in the draft, which will begin at 10 AM on Thursday.
Ohlendorf, 29, went 1-3 with a 8.15 ERA over nine starts with Pittsburgh in 2011. Plagued with injuries over the past two seasons, Ohlendorf spent most of the season on the disabled list with a shoulder strain in 2011. He also missed time in 2010 with back issues and posted a 4.07 ERA over 21 starts. Ohlendorf was second-time arbitration eligible and would have received a raise over his $2.025 salary from last season.
Ohlendorf was acquired from the New York Yankees in 2008 along with pitchers Daniel McCutchen, Jeff Karstens and outfielder Jose Tabata for outfielder Xavier Nady and pitcher Dasamo Marte.
The Pirates still have eight other arbitration eligible’s players. They have until midnight on Monday to offer arbitration before the deadline. Those players include pitchers Jeff Karstens, Jason Grilli, Jose Veras, Chris Resop, Joel Hanrahan, Evan Meek, Charlie Morton and outfielder Garrett Jones.
