PITTSBURGH — The Pittsburgh Pirates today announced that they have signed left-hander Jo-Jo Reyes and right-hander Logan Kensing to minor league contracts. Both include an invite to big league spring training.
Reyes, 27, split the 2011 season with the Toronto Blue Jays and Baltimore Orioles where he went 5-7 with a 5.11 ERA over 29 appearances (25 starts). Reyes was drafted by the Atlanta Braves in the second round of the 2003 draft. He a 6.05 ERA over 70 appearences in the Majors.
Kensing, 29, began the season pitching in Independant ball before being signed by the New York Yankees to a minor league deal. Kensing went 1-1 with a 4.28 ERA over 21 games with Triple-A Scranton-Wilkes-Barre. He walked 13 and struck out 32 over 27.1 innings of relief. Kensing missed the entire 2010 season recovering from elbow surgery and hasn’t appeared in the Majors since 2009. He has appeared in 134 Major League games with the Florida Marlins and Washington Nationals where he’s posted a 5.81 ERA.
The Pirates have now signed 18 minor league free agents this offseason, 11 of them with non-roster spring training invites.
They include: (With invites) Brandon Boggs, Jeff Clement, Nick Evans, Jake Fox, Hernandez, Ryota Igrashi, Kensing, Shairon Martis, Jose Morales, Reyes and Tim Wood; (Without) Kyle Cofield, Jose Diaz, Kris Johnson, Milver Reyes, Gerlis Rodriguez, Wyatt Toregas and Stefan Welch.
Notes:
- Outfielder Corey Wimberly signed a minor league deal with the New York Mets today according to Baseball America. Wimberly hit .238 with 17 runs, five doubles, three triples, 11 RBI and 15 stolen bases over 56 games with Triple-A Indy over the 2011 season.
- The Pirates today announced that they have hired Phil Huttmann and Jamie Brewington as Professional Scouts.
