In a game that featured many of the same looks as last year’s spring game, no clear winner has emerged as the top candidate to be under center in 2013.
Paul Millard threw three touchdowns and finished with 185 yards on 16 of 27 passing. His touchdown strikes were from 10, 46 and 24 yards. Ford Childress finished with 169 yards on 14 of 21 passes and threw the games only interception to Travis Bell.
Both quarterbacks made the same type of throws. They both showed their abilities to throw screens and neither seemed to confident going down the field.
With both Millard and Childress putting up similar numbers, the question of who will be the Mountaineers signal caller still remains unanswered.
Of the situation, Holgorsen told the team’s official site, “We’ve got a long way to go.”
The rest of the offense looked just as expected.
The running game looked very fluid behind Dustin Garrison, Dreamius Smith and Wendell Smallwood. The three backs split time all game on both the first team and second team offense. Garrison tallied 51 yards on seven carries, Smith 39 yards on seven carries, and Smallwood 25 yards on seven carries.
The receivers were highlighted by sophomore Jordan Thompson and new JUCO transfer Kevin White. Thompson caught six passes for 123 yards and three touchdowns while White hauled in five catches for 72 yards and a touchdown.
The defense ultimately came up the victor in the matchup, winning 41-33. The defense won by making stops and forcing the Gold team to kick field goals.
Sean Walters led the defense with five tackles.
The spring game concludes the spring practices for WVU.
NOTE: Weirton native, Connor Arlia won the Tom Nickolich Award for the top walk-on and also was one of three players to receive the Iron Mountaineer Award by the strength and condition staff.
