Conotton Valley hadn’t defeated Tuscarawas Central Catholic since 2006. That all changed on a beautiful Saturday evening. The two schools were meeting up for the first time since 2012. The Rockets wasted no time after stopping the Saints first drive. Quarterback Zach Putnam found Kamden Wright who broke through the Saints defense for a 54 yard touchdown reception. After stopping the Saints on a 4th down attempt, the Rockets got the ball on the TCC 36 yard line. A few plays later the junior, Putnam found Wright again for their second touchdown of the night to take a 13-0 lead at 4:56 of the first quarter. On the ensuing drive for the Rockets, Putnam completed the hat trick on the night this time finding classmate Brooks Bower from 59 yards out to make the score 19-0 in favor of the hosts.
The Rockets took that lead into the second quarter. With 7:55 remaining in the half senior running back, Noah Smith found paydirt from 4 yards out. The Rockets went for two and converted to extend their lead to 27-0. After a Brooks Bower interception, Kamden Wright wasted no time getting his third receiving touchdown of the night from Putnam. Bower got his second interception in as many drives and got the ball back for his offense. With 57 seconds remaining in the half, and the Rockets leading 33-0, Putnam found Wright again for Wright’s fourth touchdown of the night and Putnam’s fifth through the air. Conotton Valley went for two again and converted to make the score 41-0 Rockets at the half.
The mercy rule kicked in and Conotton Valley took almost ten minutes off the clock on their way to their seventh straight score. The Rockets were seven for seven on scoring drives in the game. Noah Smith got his second touchdown of the evening on an 8 yard run to finish the scoring at 48-0.
Putnam only played in the first half and threw for 220 yards and 5 touchdowns. He was 11-12 passing on the evening. His top receiver, Knight, hauled in 6 receptions for 140 yards and 4 scores. Bower collected 2 receptions for 58 yards. He also collected two interceptions. Noah Smith carried the ball 16 times for 124 yards and 2 touchdowns for the Rockets.
Senior Kenton Renicker threw for 135 yards on nine completions and one interception. Freshman running back Kenton Renicker threw the other interception on a failed trick play. Zane Norris was the top receiver hauling in four passes for 52 yards. Tuscarawas Central opens up their home slate next week against Fisher Catholic. The Rockets hit the road to take on 1-0 Malvern.
