While all the recruiting talk about 2014 and 2015, WVU is now making a splash for the 2013 season by adding All-CUSA and Houston transfer, Charles Sims.
Sims announced after the end of the 2012 season that he’d be transferring. On the list of potential suitors was UCLA and West Virginia. Today, Sims made an official visit to the WVU campus and is said to have chosen the Mountaineers as his final home before entering the NFL Draft after his last season of eligibility.
Sims has been battling ankle injuries but even through that, he was able to lead Houston in rushing last season. He tallied 851 yards and 11 touchdowns last season on the ground. He also hauled in 37 passes for 373 yards and three touchdowns. He missed three full games and the second half of three other games due to injuries. He still managed to average 94.6 yards per game and 136.0 all-purpose yards per game despite his injuries.
Sims is ranked the 5th best running back prospect in the 2014 NFL Draft this pre-season.
He’ll join Dustin Garrison, Andrew Buie, Dreamius Smith, and Wendell Smallwood in the backfield for the Mountaineers.
Much like transfer quarterback Clint Trickett, Sims is going to be looking for solid playing time to improve his draft stock. Sims can come in and play immediately, since he just graduated from Houston in the spring.
Head coach Dana Holgorsen has ties to Houston, as he served as offensive coordinator a few years back. The offense there thrived with Case Keenum at the reigns. This season, without a solid quarterback still looming for the Mountaineers, Holgorsen might be looking to his running game to carry the load.
