LATROBE, PA – The talking is done and it’s now time to open training camps in the NFL.
The Steelers did just that today as players arrived at Saint Vincent College in Latrobe.
“It’s good to be back,” nose tackle Casey Hampton said. “It’s fun to play football again. I have never been a fan of training camp, so I am not exactly happy about being at training camp, but I am happy to be back with teammates.”
Players needed to arrive at Saint Vincent College by 3:00pm and the team started training camp with conditioning tests at 4:00pm.
“We’re all just excited to be back out here and get back to work and do what we do and that’s playing ball,” said defensive end Brett Keisel.
With camp starting and the Steelers just recently being allowed to talk to free agent players after the signing of the new collective bargaining agreement, there is little time for the team to sign players and make decisions about their 2011 roster.
Earlier this week, the Steelers locked up both cornerback Ike Taylor and kicker Shaun Suisham to multi-year contracts and just today opened up salary cap space as they released both left tackle Max Starks and veteran wide receiver Antwaan Randle El.
“It’s always tough this time of year,” said Keisel of the release of Starks. “You develop relationships with guys, but that’s the nature of this business. It’s something that you really don’t have much control over and you have to roll with the punches and keep moving forward.”
The Steelers start a full practice schedule tomorrow, but they will not be practicing in pads until Sunday.
