The Ravens blowout in week one was a distant memory for the Steelers this week at Heinz Field.
The Steelers pounded the Seahawks 24-0, rolling for 421 total yards and registering five sacks on defense.
“We performed really well today, but it’s only week two,” said Troy Polamalu. “It’s important for us to be consistent and hopefully we can carry this momentum.”
The offense moved the ball at will against the Seahawks and the defense pitched a shutout, shutting down the Seattle offense.
Albeit this was against the Seattle Seahawks, this was much needed for a team that was dominated last weekend in Baltimore on both sides of the ball.
“Did we play well against Baltimore, no, we know that,” said Hines Ward. “Today, I think our defense set the tempo and we got something going in the run game and that opened up the passing game. Today was an overall good team win.”
The Steelers scored both of their first half touchdowns on the ground with a Rashard Mendenhall one yard run and an Isaac Redman 20-yard run.
The Steelers got a scare late in the second quarter when Ben Roethlisberger was injured when DE Raheem Brock was flagged for roughing the passer after rolling up on Roethlisberger’s right knee, but the Steelers quarterback returned in the second half.
“Pretty scary,” said Roethlisberger. “You just feel guys around your legs and the way he kind of rolled up on me was a scary feeling. Structurally it felt fine, I didn’t hear anything pop. Then it was a matter of just playing with the pain.”
Roethlisberger later threw a two yard touchdown pass to Mike Wallace in the corner of the endzone.
“It was a little chemistry, you know, me and my guy (Roethlisberger) have been working on it,” said Wallace of his fade touchdown catch. “Coach hasn’t thrown me one of those for a while and they finally gave me one. Hopefully I can get a couple more now.”
Wallace finished the game with eight catches for 126 yards and a touchdown.
Rookie lineman Marcus Gilbert, the Steelers second round draft pick out of Florida, started at right tackle in place of Willie Colon who was lost last weekend for the season with a triceps injury.
“I was more pumped up than usual running out of the tunnel, but after I got the first series out of the way, everything was kind of smoothed in.” said Gilbert.
