CHARLOTTE, NC – The games that don’t count are now over for the Steelers. Now it’s time to focus on the Baltimore Ravens.
The Steelers finished the preseason with a 33-17 win over the Carolina Panthers in Charlotte.
Ben Roethlisberger, Troy Polamalu and Rashard Mendenhall did not play and most of the starting units played in very limited action as some of the older players tried to hold their spots on the team while the younger players tried to make the team.
One of those players who most likely secured a spot as the 4th running back was Jonathan Dwyer, who ran 50 yards for a touchdown in the second quarter.
Charlie Batch started the game and went 6 for 8 for 59 yards, but played just the first quarter before handing the offense over to Dennis Dixon for the remainder of the game.
Dixon ended the game going 11 for 22 for 157 yards and one touchdown.
The Steelers will now look to get down to their final 53 man roster for the deadline tomorrow (Saturday, September 3rd).
Notes: The Steelers are 16-5 in the preseason over the last five seasons (2011 – 3-1, 2010 – 3-1, 2009 – 3-1, 2008 – 3-1, 2007 – 4-1)… The Steelers improved to 8-4 all-time in the preseason against the Panthers… Undrafted TE Weslye Saunders caught a 15 yard touchdown pass and most likely secured a roster spot… LB Mortty Ivy had six tackles and a sack
