It’s not a good sign when even the Steelers head coach addresses that things need to be fixed after four weeks of the season.
The Steelers decided not to show up in Houston until the second half as the Houston Texans beat the Steelers 17-10 at Reliant Stadium.
“We’ve got some work to do,” said Head Coach Mike Tomlin. “It’s not anything mystical. We will remain together and we will stay singly focused on our work. We understand that our issues are fundamental and they really are.”
The Texans controlled the ball in the first half starting the game with a 19 play drive for a touchdown and the Steelers couldn’t get in a rhythm offensively, mostly due to the offensive lines inability to control the line.
“We have to get better and stay together as a team,” said right tackle Marcus Gilbert. “We can’t beat ourselves.”
The Steelers were outgained 216-125 in the first half.
The second half started better for the Steelers as they took the opening kickoff of the second half 74 yards in 13 plays resulting in a three yard Rashard Mendenhall touchdown run.
“We did start to run the ball there in the second half,” said Ben Roethlisberger. “We were in it all the way to the end and just couldn’t make that play going down to the end.”
Texans RB Arian Foster ran for 155 yards and a touchdown in the game against the Steelers defense.
“They made some cutbacks and we missed tackles,” said LB LaMarr Woodley. “It’s just basic fundamental things we need to work on. Today we did a bad job of tackling.”
Roethlisberger injured his foot in the second to the last series of the game and was in a boot on crutches after the game.
“Just got tackled from behind and the guy came down on the back of my foot,” said Roethlisberger. “I’m feeling a little bit of pain.”
Notes: RB Rashard Mendenhall left in the 3rd quarter with a hamstring injury… DE Aaron Smith was carted to the locker room in the 4th quarter with a foot injury … Hines Ward moved into 20th place all-time in NFL history with 11,838 receiving yards… The 71,585 fans was a record crowd at Reliant Stadium
