A streak lasting more than 30 years old will come to an end this week in the Ohio Valley. It has been 31 years since Steubenville Big Red and the Massillon Tigers last played a football game, dating back to 1978.
Massillon enters Friday nights game at 5-1 after narrowly losing to Cleveland St. Ignatius last weekend in a thrilling 21-26 contest. Steubenville comes into the game 6-0, and riding an Ohio Valley record 66 game win streak! They are also 1 of only 3 undefeated football teams left in the Ohio Valley2009 Football season, with Magnolia and Weirton Madonna respectively.
The Massillon Tigers and Steubenville Big Red are programs with a lot of history, as they have been dominate Ohio powers. Massillon is the #1 ranked team in Ohio in terms of all time wins, with Steubenville being ranked 3rd all time. The Massillon Tigers have been Ohio State Champs 22 times, with the latest being nearly 40 years ago in 1970. Steubenville Big Red have been Ohio State Champs 9 times, most recently in 2006 after they defended their 2005 championship.
Tension and emotions are sure to be high. Make sure you get there early, as standing room will be limited. Kickoff is slated for 7:00pm this Friday in Death Valley – Steubenville, Ohio.
