As Christmas approaches and the weather turns blustery the winter sports heat up inside. Last night Wheeling Park High School’s defending State Champion Wrestling Team had their home opener for the 2022-2023 season as the host the John Marshall Monarchs.
Wheeling Park has their work cut out for them this season with the departure of a couple State Champions Nate Shelek and Gabe Carman. They also lost Hunter Nixon who placed third in States last year.
However, the shelves are not bare in the Park Wrestling room as three-time State Champion Eric Brothers Jr. is still in the house. Another State Champion, Bradyn Lucas, also returns and looks to dominate again this year in the 144 lb. weight class. State runner-ups Noah White, Jack Lowe, and Quinton Velas are also lock and loaded and ready to make another run.
John Marshall also plans to make some waves again the coming season with standouts Klypsan Wallace and Ethan Cook looking to lead the Monarchs to great things. They did lose Carl Cochran who place second in states.
As for last night’s match Wheeling Park finished off the Monarchs with a 55-15 win on Youth Night to celebrate the Wheeling Wrestling Club. Wheeling Park looked very strong all night, but the Monarchs fought hard and had a very impressive showing with several matches going the distance.
