Over the hills and through the woods to Barnesville we go. While I say that a bit in gest, we literally had to walk through the woods to get to the stadium Friday evening for the annual Milk game between Barnesville and Union Local. Not being from Barnesville and getting there a bit late, meant we had to endure a bit of a hike to get to the stadium. Parking was at a premium for the backyard battle. We do apologize to whoever’s yard we happen to walk through to get there.
Though adventurous, the travel and walk to the game was definitely worth the effort. We were treated to a scoring frenzy with plenty of offense and gutsy plays.
Union Local opened the scoring in the first quarter driving down the field in short order but failing to convert on the extra point to take the lead early on 6-0.
The Shamrocks answered the call shortly after with C.J. Hannahs scoring on a QB keeper. Making the extra point the Rocks took the lead 7-6.
Not to be outdone, Union Local quarterback Carter Blake connected with Dre Saunders with a stellar TD pass and this time making the extra point, Union Local pulls ahead 13-7.
C.J. Hannahs again said not in my house and ran for yet another touchdown for the Rocks to pull in front 14-13.
This wasn’t just a quarterback show on this evening in Barnesville, both running backs decided to make their presence known shortly after with Jaxsan Price running 49 yards to house it and put Union Local in front once again 20-14. Soon after Barnesville’s Taison Starr took a pass 76 yards to pay dirt for another big play touchdown, putting the Rocks ahead yet again 21-20.
The back and forth continued when Hayden Mcrate scores for Union Local putting them in the lead one more time 26-21.
Barnesville answered the bell one last time late in the fourth with Starr gashing the Jet’s defense right up the middle scoring a touchdown. Barnesville this time converts a 2-point conversion to make the score 29-26. Then the Barnesville defense showed up stopping the Jets deep in their end and finally going into the ever so fun victory formation. This win not only lets Barnesville claim the Milk Bucket, but it completes the regular season for the Rocks undefeated, finishing 10-0.
Union Local, 5-5 on the year, should hold their head’s high after this one. Both teams fought hard and left everything on the field. All of Union Local’s loses this year, minus one, were extremely close games making this regular season something they could be proud of. Look for Union Local to make some noise in the playoffs.
Both teams will enter post season play next weekend. Good luck to both teams in the playoffs, as for all Ohio Valley schools.
