Expectations are low coming into the 2013 season. These expectations are coming from both the media and the fan base. WVU was picked to finish 8th in the Big 12 before camp started. Fans have been worried about the departure of Geno Smith, Tavon Austin, and Stedman Bailey, not to mention JD Woods and offensive linemen Jeff Braun and Joe Madsen. But the 2013 season won’t be as bad as you think. Be excited for t he 2013 season.
While a starting quarterback hasn’t been named just yet, it looks as if Clint Trickett or Ford Childress will start the season. Coaches believe that any of the three quarterbacks can come in and get the job done, though. This could be because of the type of offense Dana Holgorsen runs. The receivers on this team are very unproven, but can offer some very promising hopes. Kevin White is a big body on the outside. He has the speed to go deep and the body to go inside. On the other side, either KJ Myers or Ivan McCartney will step up. Both of these guys know the offense and have been in it before on the field. The running backs need no explanation. They’re stacked. The offensive line should be better this season, even with newer guys stepping in. With a more solid running game, Holgorsen’s air raid offense will be more balanced.
Defensively, you have to believe that they’ll be better. The most solid position on the defensive side of the ball is the safety position. Karl Joseph and Darwin Cook both solidify that group. Cook is a senior and Joseph is a proven talent who wants to be better. The linebackers are also a group that should be better. With moving Isaiah Bruce to SPUR, the group in the middle should have an even better chance to get to the ball carriers. The defensive line should prove effective with seniors Will Clarke and Shaq Rowell. The cornerback position was a question mark after Nana Kyeremeh’s season ending shoulder surgery but by the end of camp it’s seemed to be answered. Ishmael Banks and Travis Bell have stepped up nicely. Here’s to hoping it translates well in the regular season.
Folks, the season is almost here. In two short weeks our Mountaineers will take the field for the first regular season game of 2013. Instead of setting your hopes low, be excited for the season, no matter the outcome. West Virginia football is the only football we have. Lets go… Mountaineers.
