I’d like to take a break from the current WVU news and talk about another quarterback battle that’s brewing. This one is in the NFL and features one of the best statistical passers in WVU’s history. He was a projected first rounder who fell into the second round and is currently behind one of the most booed quarterbacks in the NFL. But Geno Smith shouldn’t start in the New York Jets first game of the season.
Hear me out. Smith is probably better than Mark Sanchez. Sure, Sanchez has had the starting job for a number of years, and sure, Sanchez took the Jets to multiple playoff victories, but his time is dwindling as the starter in New York. Sanchez, though, will likely be named the starter over Smith come Week 1, and Smith should be happy about that.
I’m not a fan of Tim Tebow at all, but somehow the guy won games in Denver. He didn’t come in right away, and that was probably the best thing for him and the fan base. After Kyle Orton struggled in 2011, the fans begged for Tebow. When he finally took over the reigns, Tebow Mania took off.
Smith could be in a similar situation in New York. The fans already have Sanchez labeled as “on the downfall of his career”. If Smith starts the season, the fan base may just look at it as “Okay, moving forward.” If Sanchez starts the season and doesn’t perform well, Smith is the next option. If Smith comes in and “pulls a Tebow”, then “Geno Mania” could take over the Big Apple.
