Rushel Shell has been under a lot of scrutiny since leaving PITT, but the WVU fan base will welcome him with open arms.
First of all, whenever WVU has a chance to take something away from PITT, they’ll gladly do it. Although, they aren’t really “taking” him from PITT as much as the Panthers are giving him away. Either way, WVU fans will look at it as the fact that the WPIAL all-time leading rusher is in a WVU uniform rather than a PITT one.
Secondly, adding Shell just makes sense in terms of running back depth. Now I know you’re probably thinking, “WVU just added Charles Sims and they already have four other running backs after that.” Yes, that’s true but here’s the reality of that situation.
Sims is only going to be at WVU for one season. After that fact, Shell would have to sit out next season due to NCAA transfer regulations. In 2014, Shell would be playing his second season, giving him two more year’s of eligibility. Also in 2014, Dustin Garrison, Andrew Buie and Dreamius Smith will all be seniors. In 2015, that leaves Shell and Wendell Smallwood in the backfield, along with any recruits picked up by then.
Shell, if he gets his head on right, can one day be the go-to guy in the backfield for WVU if he chooses to come to the Mountaineers.
