The West Virginia High School playoffs started with 48 teams, four weeks later, we’re down to six.
Two of those schools hail from the Ohio Valley. Weirton Madonna and the Brooke Bruins will proudly represent the Ohio Valley this weekend on Wheeling Island with their perfect records at stake for a State Championship.
For the Bruins, this is their first appearance in the Super 6 since 1992 when they bowed down to DuPont 36-7. Brooke has had one of the most miraculous turnarounds in OVAC football history. In 2008 the Bruins posted a 3-7 season, finishing the season with 7 consecutive loses. The program was determined to turn things around, and they started by hiring Coach Tom Bruney to take over the head coaching duties. In his first year, Bruney was able to lead the Bruin program to something that it has not done in nearly 20 years. Under a very demanding AAA schedule, the Brooke Bruins have been perfect in posting their first undefeated record since being led by the legendary Paul “Bud” Billiard.
As the #1 seed, Brooke will face the #2 seed South Charleston. South Charleston enters this weekends game 12-1. SC narrowly lost to Capitol 6-8 in the 4th week of the season. Kickoff is slated for Saturday, December 5th at 12 noon.
In Single A action, Weirton Madonna is having one of the most successful football streaks in school history. For the second year in a row, the Dons have capped off perfect undefeated regular season records with a trip to the State Championship game. Madonna is currently riding a 25 game regular season winning streak, the longest in the Ohio Valley. As the 2008 State Runner ups, The Dons vowed on making it back to the Super 6. Madonna head man, Coach Kramer is looking to lead the Dons to their 2nd State Title in school history. Kramer, who went over 100 career coaching Victories this year, also coached the Dons in 1987 to a State Championship.
The #1 seeded Dons will be paired up against #2 seed Man. Man enters the contest 11-1, with their lone loss coming to the hands of Chapmanville 14-16 in mid season. Kickoff is slated for Saturday, December 5th at 7pm.
