TRENTON, NJ – Dan Charleston and Ryan Ginand each chipped in two-point games to help lead the Trenton Devils to a 4-2 victory over the Wheeling Nailers at the Sun National Bank Center Sunday evening.
Wheeling started the game with a fast-paced tempo, and it paid off as the team scored the game’s first goal. Christiaan Minella fired a shot from the circle which deflected off the pads of Trenton goaltender Shane Connelly. Kelly Miller picked up the rebound and fired the puck into the net to give Wheeling the 1-0 lead after the first period.
Trenton tied the game from unlikely skater. Tough guy Miles Stoesz finished off a gritty shift by crashing the net and slipping the puck in the crease past Peter Delmas to tie the game at one. The goal was the first of the season for Stoesz.
Wheeling took the lead back nearly four minutes later on a 5-on-3 advantage. Jason DeSantis ripped a slapshot from the point which beat Connelly, giving the Nailers the 2-1 lead. Less than two minutes later, Trenton tied the game at two with a 5-on-3 power play goal of their own. Ryan Hayes tapped in a rebound in the crease behind Delmas who was searching for the loose puck. The game remained tied after 40 minutes played.
Playing their third game in three days, fatigue started to set in the third, as the Nailers were unable to generate many shots in the third period. the Devils outshot Wheeling 13-3 in the final period. Trenton took advantage, and took the lead at 4:58 in the period as Dan Charleston batted in a bouncing puck which deflected off the body of Delmas and into the net for the go-ahead goal 3-2. Trenton later added a Jeremy Akeson empty net goal to seal the win 4-2.
Prior to the game, the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins (AHL) reassigned forwards Ryan Schnell, David Marshall, Andrew Orpik, and Tyler Murovich to the Nailers. All four players played in today’s game. The Nailers will have a couple of days off before traveling to Toledo to take on the Walleye. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m.
The Nailers return home to WesBanco Arena on Sunday, February 27 against the Greenville Road Warriors. Game time is slated for 6:05 p.m.
