The Panthers of Tug Valley were just too much for Charleston Catholic to handle, as Tug Valley won the West Virginia Class A Championship 58-41. Tug was last year’s Class AA champion. They are the first school to win back-to-back state championships being a part of different classifications.
Tug Valley’s Aaron Muncy led all scorers with 21 points and was 4-7 from beyond the arc. Teammate Austin Brewer followed with 15 and Charleston Catholic’s Nick George had 13.
Things were close in the first quarter as both teams battled back and forth. In the second quarter Tug Valley had a small edge and at halftime the Panthers were on top 32-26.
The second half was when the Panthers started to pull away. Defense led to offense for the Panthers as they held the Irish to just five points in the third quarter.
Tug Valley is the first public school to win Class A in West Virginia since Williamson in 2001
