WHEELING, WV – West Virginia used 3 Ohio turnovers to help route the Buckeye’s for their largest margin victory in more than 30 years.
After opening the game with a series of running plays to Linsly’s Phil Arcie, West Virginia went deep in the air with a 63 yard pass to Wheeling Central’s Marcus Clifford for the first score of the game.
West Virginia and Ohio would trade punts before Martins Ferry’s Casey Bain stopped momentum by intercepting a West Virginia pass by Linsly’s Pytlak.
Ohio capitalized on the turnover with a fieldgoal by the leg of River High School’s Tanner Wright as time ran out of the 1st quarter.
After a series of possession changes, West Virginia was able to strike first in the 2nd quarter by the legs of Brooke’s Ryan Lazear. The Mountaineer offense went 47 yards in 8 plays.
Ohio tried to get the ball moving through the air, only to be intercepted by Weirton Madonna’s Chris Eloi.
West Virginia went into halftime with a 14-3 lead over the Buckeyes.
Halftime featured the McDonald’s All Star Band, along with Wheeling Central’s Bria Cross winning the Queen of Queens, and St. Clairsville’s Nate Bohash winning the OVAC Band Scholarship.
Ohio received the ball to start the 2nd half, but the Buckeyes were unable to hold on to the ball after Madonna’s Chris Eloi stripped Union Local’s Bernie Thompson on a first down reception .
Morgantown’s Joey Musick scored from 6 yards out to give the Mountaineers a 21-3 lead.
The 4th quarter held steady, with both States playing solid defense. West Virginia concluded the scoring with a field goal by the leg of Morgantowns Nick Romito.
