Elkins, WV, April 7, 2011—On Thursday, the Wheeling Jesuit baseball team (9-12, 7-6 WVIAC) relinquished their WVIAC home doubleheader because of field issues and traveled to Elkins, WV to battle Davis & Elkins College (20-9, 10-5 WVIAC). The Cardinals took both games from the Senators by scores of 16-8 and 10-9, respectively.
In game one, Wheeling Jesuit plated eight runs to break an even ballgame and shut down the Senators in the final inning for the 16-8 victory. Jordan Medley led the Cardinals with a 3-for-4 effort from the plate and scored three runs, while teammate, Ryan Venderlic blasted a bases clearing grand slam. Venderlic was 2-for-4 with 5 RBIs.
In the nightcap, The Cardinals held a 10-3 lead heading into the bottom of the seventh when the Senators tried to steal the lead. D&E exploded with six runs and loaded the bases when WJU pitcher Jordan Kraus closed the door, striking out D&E’s last chance at a comeback.
Corey Hall scattered three hits around the yard (3-for-4) for the Cardinals, collecting two RBIs, two runs scored, and a stolen base. Jordan Kraus added a 2-for-4 performance and scored two runs.
The Cardinals are scheduled to host a three-game series against WVIAC Noerthern Division opponent, Alderson-Broaddus College, at the JB Chambers I-470 Complex. Saturday’s April 9th doubleheader is scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m. followed by nine-inning contest on Sunday, April 10th which also begins at 1:00 p.m.
