WHEELING – On Sunday afternoon, Chestnut Hill scored four goals in a 2:09 span of the first quarter en route to a 6-0 lead in a 13-6 victory over Wheeling Jesuit University at James LaRosa Stadium.
Mike Melnychenko scored five goals and added an assist to lead the Griffin offensive attack. Shane Morlock added four goals and two assists while Mark Winkelspecht netted two goals and three assists.
Trailing 9-3 at halftime, WJU attempted a comeback when Colin Jack scored the first two goals of the second half, with Landon DelPrince assisting on both goals.
The Griffins retaliated with three consecutive goals to put the game out of reach.
Tyler Johnson, Phil Mergner, Dan Petraglia, and DelPrince all tallied goals for the Cardinals. Johnson also added an assist, and DelPrince finished with three assists as part of a four point day.
Joe Amsler, in relief of starting goalie Jim LaPenna, made several outstanding saves in his 33:32 of play, finishing with 11 saves on 15 shots.
Dakota Maurer earned the win for Chestnut Hill, stopping 8-of-14 shots while Griffin midfielder Alex Sabia dominated the face-off circle, winning 16-of-21 battles. Sabia had a game-high 10 groundballs, while Johnson led the Cardinals with four groundballs.
Wheeling Jesuit will be back in action on Saturday, April 9th as they travel to Old Westbury, NY to play ECC opponent New York Institute of Technology. Face-off is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
