WHEELING – Doug Rogers, Mikael Bedard, and David Marshall each finished with four-point nights as the Wheeling Nailers defeated the Cincinnati Cyclones 6-2 in front of 4,046 at WesBanco Arena Saturday night. The win extends the Nailers lead in the North Division to 14 points.
Nailers forward Doug Rogers opened up the scoring, breaking into the zone and firing a sniper’s shot into the corner of the net past Cyclones goaltender Marc Chevrie to give his team a 1-0 lead. Rogers played a hand on the next two Wheeling goals. Rogers fed a pass in front to Mikael Bedard who buried the puck into the net at 9:18 of the period to extend the Nailers lead to 2-0. Nearly four minutes later the combination of Rogers to Bedard was successful again, only this time on the power play. Bedard took a stretch pass from Rogers, and on the breakaway Bedard slipped a backhand shot past Chevrie to make the score 3-0. Dustin Sproat got the Cyclones on the board late in the first, as he fired a hard wrist shot past Peter Delmas, to make the score 3-1.
Only one goal was scored in the second, and it came off the stick of David Marshall, who sniped a shot past the glove side of Chevrie to lift the Nailers lead to 4-1. Early in the third, Marshall registered his second goal of the game beating Chevrie low on a shot from the slot to propel the Nailers to a 5-1 lead. After a Sam D’Agostino goal at 9:07 of the third, Wheeling received some offense from defenseman Dan Henningson, who ripped a shot from the slot in the net to give Wheeling the 6-2 lead. Peter Delmas made 27 saves for Wheeling to improve to 8-0 on the season.
The game marked the third consectuive 4,000+ crowd at WesBanco Arena.
The Nailers have a few days off before taking on the Reading Royals at the Cambria County War Memorial in Johnstown Friday night, and the Toledo Walleye in Johnstown on Saturday.
